When the night draws in and the only thing lighting your way is the gentle glow of the LED street lights in Southend, do you ever glance up and think:

“I wonder how these street lamps work, and how often they need replacing?”

Chances are, not very often! Most people are just glad to have them working and lighting the way.

But the Council had been thinking long and hard about improvements to the local area, which resulted in a huge upgrade. Local business owners – take note…

How the new LED Lighting in Southend works

In September 2018, Southend Borough Council completed a £13.5 million LED lighting upgrade across Southend-on-sea and supporting local towns.

Some years prior in 2012, the conclusion was made that LED Lighting would provide a more effective and sustainable solution compared to the old style lights.

Southend was the first town in England to reap the benefits of Green Finance offered by the Green Investment Bank, from which we received £8.2 million towards the project!

Out with the old, in with the new

14,500 street lights were switched to modern LED fittings and connected to a Central Management System (CMS). The CMS allows the council to brighten and dim specific lights depending on the needs of the community!

The new LEDs adjust their settings to sustain their ‘health’. E.G, older lights will switch to 60% power output to increase their lifetime, so they can light the streets for longer!

This means less men up ladders switching bulbs and a happier, safer community!

In addition to the LEDs, illuminated street signs were replaced with reflective signs and bollards.

The new LEDs are expected to save the council 57% in energy costs – winning!

Savvy MDs are choosing LEDs!
