Is an unqualified person installing the electrics for your Essex home? Would you know?

You employ a tradesperson to come to your home to fit a piece of equipment. It could be an alarm system, some CCTV cameras, an automated gate, air conditioning unit or a specialist extractor fan in your loft.

All of these require a mains power supply via a new circuit or an existing circuit.

But, as a homeowner, do you ever think to ask if the person installing the equipment is also qualified to add a power supply – or spur, as they may also be known?

Who can connect equipment to the mains electric in my home?

Your installers may be excellent:

• security alarm engineers
• fire alarm engineers
• heating engineers
• AC engineers

But are they qualified electricians?

Can they prove that they are ‘competent’ to do electrical work in your home?

Would they think to ask you if your home was earthed before starting any work?

How can I tell if they’re qualified?

The Government has schemes that certify people as suitably qualified. These are known as Part P schemes.

Electrical Safety First explains:

All electrical installation work in a home, garden, conservatory or outbuilding must meet the Building Regulations.

Apart from some types of minor work, all electrical work must either be reported to the local-authority building-control, or be carried out by an electrician who is registered with one of the Government-approved scheme providers.

By law, all homeowners and landlords must be able to prove that all electrical installation work meets Part P, or they will be committing a criminal offence.Local authorities can make homeowners or landlords remove or alter any work that does not meet the Building Regulations.

To resolve this issue, good Fire & Security companies often have a qualified electrician on their workforce and will factor in his/her attendance as part of the quote for your job.

Others will have a trusted third party electrical contractor to whom they outsource this type of work.

If anything needs to be done with the electrics in your home, your installer should offer – and you should insist on – a suitably qualified electrician to do the work.

Always ask to see proof that the work is being done by an electrician who is registered with one of the Government-approved Part P schemes.

That way you can be sure you’ve complied with the Building Regulations and got a safe, legal installation.
